Not more than three Nigerian universities are named among the top 1,000 higher institutions in the world.
According to the ranking by the Times Higher World University Rankings, Covenant University, University of Ibadan and University of Lagos are the only Nigerian universities to be named in the list of top 1,000 universities in the world.
The criteria for the ranking are based on the universities’ performance in teaching, research, knowledge transfer and how they are received on the international scene.
Among the highest ranked of the three Nigerian universities is Covenant University which was ranked at number 401.
Recall in 2016, the Academic Ranking of World Universities (AWRU) and the Center for World Universities Ranking (CWUR) released a list of the top 500 and 1000 world universities respectively and no Nigerian university was on the list.
CWUR said that Nigerian universities were not considered for the ranking because of lack of quality research.
AWRU, who did not give a reason for Nigeria’s absence, made it clear that the yardstick for ranking were the number of alumni and staff publishing journals in Nature and Science, number of alumni and staff winning Nobel prizes and Field medals.
